The Director for Philanthropic and Resource Generation is primarily responsible for structuring, implementing, and monitoring a highly effective development and donor services program. He/She cultivates new and prospective donors, supports efforts to strengthen relationships with current donors and works with professional advisers and other door openers to reach the annual and long-range development goals as reflected in the Strategic Directions of KLD.
Reports to : The President
Supervises : Philanthropic and Resource Generation Staff
Coordinates with : Office of the Vice Presidents, Finance, Special Assistant to the President, and other units
Appointment : The Director for Philanthropic and Resource Generation is appointed by the President.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The position holder shall undertake the following functions:
- Performs job functions consistent with the KLD’s Vision and Mission, Core Values, and Goals; and ensures that subordinate employees perform their functions in like manner;
- Plans, organizes and controls the operations and activities of the department; prepares and secures approval of the departmental budget in support of such operations and activities;
- Establishes networking and connections with other educational institutions and community organizations to generate reciprocal support and to foster collaboration on common projects;
- Prepares criteria and guidelines for the recognition of outstanding members of the community who may be given Honorary Doctorate Degrees; recommends to the President the recognition of and awarding of honors to distinguished personalities;
- Prepares monthly planner on activities to be undertaken; consolidates departmental outputs, results, and accomplishment into quarterly performance reports and submits the same to the Office of the President;
- Manages both planned and intervening activities of subordinate employees in relation to the performance of their job functions and completion of task assignments in accordance with prescribed standards, in the process providing regular job instructions, motivational approaches, training and development, coaching and counseling, or disciplining as may be needed;
- Participates in collegial planning for policies, procedures and systems development, problem-solving and decision-making, and performance monitoring through involvement in standing and ad hoc committees and project teams;
- Organizes, implements, and/or participates in various Institutional and departmental programs and activities;
- Participates in training programs and learning sessions for the enhancement of professional, technical, and personal proficiencies;
- Develops and sustains positive relations with benefactors to generate donations, grants, and endowments to support the KLD’s primary advocacies; manages and updates databases to record donor contact and preference information as to the utilization of their donations;
- Designs and drives a process to identify, cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts and new funds from individuals, alumni, businesses, corporations and the like
- Cultivates and solicits a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors.
- Identifies and researches potential prospective donors.
- Builds and maintains relationships with estate and financial planning professionals (attorneys, accountants, trust officers, financial planners, and other advisors).
- Assists with planning and executing of special events, meetings, donor and prospective events and other continuing education programs for current and prospective donors.
- Develops materials for submission to granting/funding organizations;
- Prepares periodic financial reports highlighting summaries of donations generated and how these were utilized for submission to the President and the Board of Trustees; and
- Performs other functions, duties and responsibilities analogous, or related to and/or implied from the preceding enumerated duties and responsibilities.
